I Want to be a Paramedic/Suggestions for which BA/BS to go for?

I second the thought of just doing whatever you enjoy. For most anything you'll need a master's degree, so just enjoy your college experience. Take an anatomy class and that be more than enough to prepare you for EMS .

    ALS IFT Vs. 911

Guess it was different for 911 with one medic .Those were assessment units with just one medic.

    ALS IFT Vs. 911

I worked at an OC private ALS company and we didn't need to involve fire unless we needed manpower. I did CPAP and other ALS interventions multiple times and we just ran it with the two of us. The shady thing with the company was that we'd get stroke like symptoms/chest pain/insert acute medical...

Now can we stop using NS?

Only for persistent hypotension in newborns.

    The Future of EMS

Please let us have alternate destinations and the ability to refuse transport (I just need more ibuprofen type calls). I think the direction of our field will depend upon reimbursements. If agencies start getting paid for more in home care, then we'll see more, or if transport reimbursement...

    NYC EMS AND FACIAL HAIR?!

My guess is you have to be able to get a seal on a N95, but just yesterday saw two guys on an Ambulife ambulance in LA rocking full beards, so you never know.

Now can we stop using NS?

No, we don't even start lines of we're not giving anything. And they just took dopamine away from us.... I know, I know, dopamine's efficacy of up for debate, but it was our only pressor.

    Triaging down to BLS

I used to work in LA County, and there was a specific protocol on what constitutes ALS vs BLS. I now work in a B/P staffed ambulance where no one lets their basic attend. There was a protocol to downgrade to ALS if no medic boxes were available, but it was rarely used in my current county . I...

ALS Role at MCI in a targeted system

I think it all depends on the situation and your system. How many medics will you have on scene with your initial response? Do you have to pull medics from boxes, or do you have enough on engines? First priority should be treatment and transport, since that's the only place ALS treatments should...

Moving a Trauma Patient in severe pain without medications

You said that he was only A/Ox2, so an altered trauma patient. My thought on multi-system trauma, especially head trauma, is get them to a trauma hospital as soon as possible because that's the only place that can fully treat these patients. Also keep in mind, say we do wait on scene and he...

Age cap for municipal service Paramedic?

We had some 40 year olds start in our pension system. Just means, for us, that they'll have to work into their late 60 to get a large percentage. Anyone have a link to one of these she capped systems?

    CA Ketamine Study

That you have to give it over five minutes in a drip for the full dose and it sounds like it's a very conservative dose at that. How about for sedation for agitation, versed or ketamine (what IM dose is typical to be effective)

Age cap for municipal service Paramedic?

I know the military can get away with age caps, but in the civilian wired that sounds allot like discrimination of the age variety.

    CA Ketamine Study

I've never seen or administered ketamine, but waiting five minutes just to give it, plus another three or four to set it up... I'm way more likely to give fentanyl. And I'm all for new drugs. Is it that much better than fentanyl?

Why do people hate on LA County protocols?

Destination I feel they're the easiest to read. Much easier than mine. http://dhs.lacounty.gov/wps/portal/dhs/ems/prehospitalcaremanual/?????????????#tabs-13 What needs ALS and what can be BLS is stated in policy 808.

Why do people hate on LA County protocols?

I'd give zofran, and fent. Then call base. UCLA base ra62 with a medical. Called to the home of a 35 male weighing 70 kg in a mild level of distress, complaining of ankle pain. Was jumping, landing wrong, and felt a snap 10/10 pain. No history, no allergies, no med. Hr 76, 120/80, 100%, 18...

Why do people hate on LA County protocols?

Cool, but if it's like our ketamine trial then it'll be in a 100cc bag with no IM dosing. Zofran is a standing order in LA. You just have to make base contact on the way to the hospital
