    accountability of controlled substance

Old company: 1 page for each narcotic. Month and year at the top. Date prefilled 31 days : Sign out (dispatcher), sign in (medic) Quantity, Sign out (medic) Sign in (dispatcher). Quantity So Dispatcher checks it with 2nd dispatcher (if it isn't signed out to a medic for the day) towards...

    Paramedic Fly Car Agencies

I think it would help in areas that don't have a lot of medics; since 90% of EMS transports don't need ALS, it makes sense to have medic on call and not on every ambulance. My PT job has done similar, medic goes on run; and if the patient is transported and doesn't need ALS the medic gets a...

Didn't call a stroke alert. Ended up being a stroke

Don't kick yourself; learn from what happened, think next time about doing a manual BP, in this case cause it is easier to hold the arm still when you are literally holding it to take the BP. Still won't change anything that you did, except tell the hospital BP is high. Stroke check was...

    Hands On defibrillation - HOD

I have been doing Compressions at least 3 times while a patient has been shocked, no issues, as long as you are wearing gloves (and regular ones) there is no problems. Kind of a surprise, and usually a few unkind words from me to the person who pushed the button but it works ok.

    Set Medics/Consultants

I got $500 a day for 2 days this summer, for sitting on a desert site while they tested a new Polaris Ranger: Never even got to see the Ranger, and I had to sign a NDA, just in case someone got hurt and I got to see the Ranger because of that. Sat in my truck, with BLS bag, and cell phone...

    911 EMT Jobs near Denver

A friend just moved from Nevada to AMR in Denver works the entire front Range. She does a lot of long distance transports; but for her they are easy, because the shortest transports she did in Nevada was 110 miles (closest hospital). She says she likes it. Says it is a mix of 911 and IFT.

Do you own or rent your home?

I owned my house in Indy for 17 years, but we bought it when we had a lot of debt, and it was cheaper than renting; but we didn't get out of the other debt: and got burned. We ended up putting a new roof, new HVAC, new Sewer Line, and new Hot Water Heater in all in 10 months, financed $35,000...

    Paramedic Fly Car Agencies

Curious on Fly Car agencies: if a Fire unit doesn't show up and patient is critical so the medic on the fly car goes in on the ambulance, with the driver of ambulance driving and medic or tech in the back with the medic on fly car in the back, what do you do with the fly car? just leave it and...

Should we have done something different for this trauma call?

A new protocol we got for Altitude sickness states that the best way to treat it is to (Paraphrasing it) "dress the patient modestly": protocol states "decent the patient" Not DESCENT. I typed the sentence into Word, and Word Grammar went 'Uh Uh wrong word choice' So I don't know who...

Should we have done something different for this trauma call?

I always laugh when dispatch says that; my part time job has a couple of dispatchers who work as EMT-B's with us, and they now dispatch it as Unconscious AND breathing, just because they hear other dispatchers say that and see us all laugh about it.

Crew obtained refusal but no vitals?

Run into this question a lot; Document the crap out of it in your narrative: cause when the guy goes to bed, and doesn't wake up in the morning the girlfriend isn't going to say "EMS tried to get him to go to the hospital, but he refused" she is going to say something like "EMS didn't do...

    Ampoule opener

1st one I opened was just after I finished Medic School at an ED I worked in, using a 4x4 gauze pad. Sliced my thumb good enough that it took 3 sutures. My thumb sucked up the full 100mcg of Fentanyl that was in the ampule. I don't like getting sutures, but I watched and the doc did them...

    Toradol

Anyone carry Nubain? My PT job carries it for Advanced EMT's on the Nevada Protocols, but it can be used on the Utah side and by the Medics we all use it for Kidney stones, and it works pretty good for that too. It works great for confusing the doctors and nurses at the ED's too.

    Supplies

When I worked in Indiana we charged ALS or BLS, then Emergent (Lights and Sirens or just lights) or Non Emergent ( No lights and sirens). We paid for our own supplies. Here in Utah and Nevada we can bill for a lot of things: Ft job we don't but I work for the Government. PT job we do, and...

EMS system needs vs human biological needs

We try to call birds when we can; and have quite a few available, but they can't always fly. Sometimes the 70+mph winds keep them on the ground or the pads: what is bad is when Dispatch says the weather is too bad and we all look up and go what weather. But 135 miles away the weather sucks.

Who has the best retirement benefits?

Check USAjobs.gov for government jobs. I have been working for the US for almost 15 years and plan to retire in 10 more. I have approx. $250K in TSP (Federal version of 401K), and am sitting on 31 weeks of leave.

Should we have done something different for this trauma call?

Since you are posting on a BLS site I would guess no on the IV, sounds like you did everything right.
