Mercy Air helicopter severely vandalized with graffiti at Hesperia Airport

Better than the helicopter that was damaged by a moose: medical crew was at the hospital (5 minutes away), and pilot was in the restroom. They landed on a moose path

    IV fluid shortages

MMiz; the best answer to your question is Yes; companies do both and still get caught with shortages.

    Questions

Why can't an EMT say no? As an EMT-B I had runs to a daycare who would call 911 for every (and I mean every) boo boo. Child fell on concrete landing on hands, and has an abrasion. Same with an adult. Stubbed toes A patient was at ED and released at 0500 this morning (it was 0900) and I am...

    My dog passed

So sorry; dogs and all pets are wonderful help to us; but it is so sad that they don't live as long. My part time job, we can take our dogs to work with us; and more than once I have come back and sat on the floor and rubbed him, and talked to him about how bad a run it. He helps keep me sane.

When to get patient contact information

We get all the info; (but we have a 90minute to 2 hour transport so it is relatively easy: including pictures of DL and insurance cards, and a picture of the patient (hard for the patient to say in court that wasn't me, when there is a picture). If you are taking it off Driver's license, make...

MMIZ, Me too, I don't ask people anymore when I don't understand the shorthand, cause they really make me feel older

EMS Provider Mental Health And Wellness

Tell that to the guy that got screwed for 10 months, then finally found a good job and left: he went from 48 hour shifts (1 trip a week, 2 hour drive) to M-Th 10 hour days and 8 hours Friday: because our Occ health doctor didn't like the medication that the VA put him on for his PTSD.

EMS Provider Mental Health And Wellness

It is hard to ask for help; I know, I didn't ask for help until it was almost to late. And right now I work somewhere that has great benefits, and a lot of ways to get help, but not for EMS. We can't ask for help without it affecting out jobs Get the help if you need it

Supplemental oxygen in relation to Spo2

Treat the patient not the machine: When I am healthy (relative) and feeling good my SPO2 runs between 88-92%; when my asthma is acting up and I am getting ready to crash hard, I run 98-99%: I think it is because I am working harder to breathe. At that level very long I will crash, and drop...

    Duty to Act?

Problem with TV and movies: anyone who dies comes back with 3 compressions and/or 1 shock. They don't they die for the biggest part. I worked 7 viable (seen arrest, CPR started fast) cardiac arrests in January, 1 survived, and he was the one who shouldn't have; the oldest and in the worst...

    Quick exit

Even if you don't come back here, or to EMS, please take advantage of the help that is out there, don't sit on it, and don't try to deal with it yourself. Get help, it is free

    Medications

If the patient took OTC oral Benadryl 30 minutes before Basic EMS arrived and your protocols state that you can give the patient oral OTC Benadryl every 45 minutes, then document what time the patient took theirs, wait 15 minutes and give them another dose. and Document the 2nd dose time

    Out of area transport

Think about doing 75% of your runs from State A, and transporting 98% to State B. That is my PT job, we cover both sides of a state line; 40 miles west into the state we are based in, and 56 miles east into the state that we transport mostly to

    Assessment

RsqCrack: because the doctors don't always take the time to check things, including looking at the medication list and more importantly the drug allergy list: In many areas EMS is better at diagnosing (or at least faster) Sepsis, and CVA's than ED's .

    Dual Sequential Defibriliation

We have talked about it at my PT job; thought and talked a lot about doing it on a patient in and out of Cardiac arrest back in January: 135 mile transport, in and out 7 times. We we decided to do it the next time he coded, (we were 35 miles into the transport: no cell or radio service) he...

    Assessment

Asking a history on every person is where you learn. When you have time between runs, look at the medications that the patient takes: figure out what those medications are for, and you can start figuring out the medical histories of patients without asking them. Pay attention and learn from...
