Most, including myself, were medics before the highway patrol. In rare circumstances the department will send somebody to medic school if it’s needed to fill a spot and no medics have applied. Very few people can make working CHP and medic school/internship on their own time work, but some have gone that route as well.

Awesome thanks a lot! I guess one of my other curiosities is with your helicopter unit (and others) do they Have multiple crews for the different shifts? Also, did you know any military reservists while in the academy? If so do you know how they handled their drill weekends once per month? (Sorry for the bombardment of questions). Again thanks for your help!

Yes, we have multiple crews for multiple shifts.

Most reserve units will give you some sort of deferral while in the academy. I don’t know the exact verbiage or process as I wasn’t in the military but I know several classmates of mine who were in the reserves and didn’t have an issue not going to drill days.

@chrls I know this is an EMS forum but hopefully you don't mind me asking one more question about the CHP! I have heard that in the academy you get some form of "wish list" to put down stations you'd like to report to when you graduate, just curious how often cadets get the station they ask for? Thanks in advance!
