  • Hi Chrls,

I have a couple questions if you don’t mind? I just graduated paramedic school and I am interested in a flight officer position with CHP, what is the timeline looking like right now? I understand you need to complete the academy then 2 years as a road officer, is their current openings for officers that have their paramedic? What is the schedule for a flight officer? 12/42?

    Thank-you,
    Trent

Sorry for the delay, I haven’t logged in for awhile.

There are several flight officer/medic openings currently but there are also lots of patrol positions open too. The department prioritizes patrol spots over flying so the air program is pretty low staffing wise until the patrol side gets built back up.

We have 8 air bases and they work 4/10’s or a 9/80.

No worries thanks for the response chrls,
I get that the department prioritizes patrol positions as that is the backbone of the dept. Which air bases normally take the new flight officers? Also do protocols go off of what county your airbase is located in?

There aren’t openings frequently enough for one base to get noticeably more new people than others.

Yes, our protocols are from the county we’re based in. Personally I work off Riverside County protocols even if we respond to neighboring counties.
hey chrls I have my EMT - P with little over 2 years ALS experience. Is there anything that bumps a candidate for air officer / medic spot rather than. Seniority? Thanks

    Pt3

The last medic we hired here met the minimum and that’s about it. Other bases will have more competition based on location etc.

There’s also a benefit to putting in time going to units and making an impression before an opening becomes available. They can get a better feel for you over time compared to a 30 minute interview.

Hopefully I answered more questions than I caused.
How many years does it take to get a medic position at CHP?

Thanks!! I’m surprised that many guys have medic licenses. It’s not an easy thing to get. Is it easier to get on as a pilot? Chp must be one of the only departments requiring helo rating. Most only require fw.

Our pilots make more than the medics so there’s also some good competition there too. Same time requirements for time on the job.

Are you in Ca? It’s a thing of the past to not require licenses for LEO aircraft. Fw or rotary. True they’re usually public use aircraft but an incident a long time ago made the FAA get onto agencies that didn’t require their pilots to have the correcting certs/ratings.
Sir, I am very interested in a career with the CHP and further down the line as a flight officer. I'm wondering if the other flight officers that you know along with yourself, would you say most entered the CHP as a paramedic already or most went to medic school after already being an officer? Thanks for your time!

Pt 1of 3. No worries. Ask away. The dream sheets, as they’re called, are made up of the open spots throughout the state that have been selected to receive the new officers. The cadets don’t pick just any office wherever they want. They rank the open spots in order of preference. The spots are assigned on several criteria.

Pt 2 of 3. In order they are needs of the department: wherever the most openings are, hardship: you have to be in a certain area for family care/medical treatments etc(this is extremely rare and I wouldn’t count on it), home ownership: owning a home within 50 miles of an open office,

Part 3 of 3. and lastly, and the most common method, by social security number: the last 4 numbers in descending order. xxx-xx-9999 would have first choice with xxx-xx-0000 being last.
