Interesting topic on whether or not an EMT service should be run in conjunctionwith a fire department. In communities of 2,000 people or less, you really don't have a choice. That is very common in my state, we only have 1.4 million people folks. City slickers and their perspective on things.;)

Doesn't Monsey have a Hatzolah chapter? I assume H has no affiliation with the fire department...?

At my volunteer EMS gig, the ambulance is owned by the volunteer association (all three volunteers), but operated by the FD, and is housed around the corner (the FFs hang out in the FS, then need to run to get the ambulance if there is a med call).

Yeah, Monsey does have Hatzolah (Chevrah Hatzolah of Rockland County [it also encompasses New Square and Wesley Hills...]) Rockland Hatzolah is one of the most unprofessional Hatzolahs around. All fourteen of Rockland County's EMS are BLS community ambulance corps (ALS runs on Rockland Paramedics fly cars,) besides one (Piermont FD has an ambulance.) My ambulance corps (Spring Hill EMS) is pretty much a professional Hatzolah that services a whole community via 9-1-1. I call us a professional Hatzolah because 60% of our members are Jewish [40% of those are Orthodox.) We have a kosher kitchen/BBQ, a sukkah during Sukkos, kosher food at our holiday and annual dinners, and a huge 8' menorah outside during chanukah.
