While floating around the forum I notice a lot of students or otherwise asking for advice (obviously). Their request is usually more specific, but I think a thread made for all the little tips, tricks, and other advice we all have would be useful.
Heck, I'm only a year in as a basic doing pre-reqs for medic class. I know I can use it.

Mine would be to get to know everyone around you at work: partners, patients, dispatchers, ER / dialysis / facility staff, gas station employees if you fill at one, become a regular with the waiters/waitresses at regional restaurants. Knowing people is a wonderful thing. You never know when or how it'll come in handy.

I hated one of my partners when i first met them and now they are one of my best friends

I have lots of partner stories. Haha.
Example: My boyfriend's an EMT too (EMT-A). He used to work for the company I do when I'm back home doing mainly BLS non-emergent transport where partners are either EMT/Driver or EMTx2. A new driver was hired on, a talkative, funny fellow. My boyfriend is one that can be very, very serious. And oh! What a poker face! So boyfriend spoke only when spoken to, and very, very little then. He read his book and when asked what he was reading, only showed the cover, then back to reading. He kept this up for a day or two before finally breaking. Mr. Driver HATED him. Thought he was the biggest jerk in the world. Now the two are best friends. Much funnier if you know the two, I suppose, but you get it.

not to derail the thread but wat is an emt-a. im assuming this is a scope specific to indiana? google didn't help.

my advice:

recognize that getting certed is only the beginning. you still have much to learn

Yeah, it's an Indiana thing. I'm not sure who/if anyone eilse uses this system, but EMT-B, EMT-A, EMT-I, EMT-P

An advanced is basically a basic that can start IVs and interpret heart rhythms. Per boyfriend.

I would think if A can do heart rhythems, they'd be higher than an I. Then again, I'm basing this on MA, where an I isn't really supposed to do anything with a monitor other than help put on the leads.

excatly why we should have the same levels in all 50 states.

My advice would be to breath you will be fine. That mistake you made, someone else has done it before you.

Remember at one time 2+4 was hard for you too.

I don't know how in-depth that is, but I know he's explained it to me before. It's more than just putting on leads. I know that. And intermediates definitely do more here. That's what almost everyone 911 here is aside from one medic and a bunch of basics.
And on advanced EMTs starting IVs, they can't start them everywhere a medic can, but they can get a line in.
