So my son has sold his Nintendo Wii and has asked for Wal-Mart Gift Cards for his birthday. This is so he can get his X-Box 360 he has been bugging me for and I keep telling him I am not buying it.

Now, help me! There are 3 different X-Box 360's at Wal-Mart. 20g hard drive, 60g hard drive, X-Box Live Silver.... Gold.... 3 months... 12 months... A Cooling thingymajig..... an ear piece that looks like a bluetooth thing.... a keyboard for messeging.... headphones..... wireless adapter.... portable memory card.... extra controllers....I think my head just exploded!!!! Someone call a Trauma Code on me!

He is 10. He goes from our house to my sisters house where they have a X-Box 360. At my sisters he has been playing Halo 3, Smackdown vs. Raw, and Call of Duty 4 (he doesn't this one, says its a "really bad game.") He wants to get Smackdown vs. Raw '08 for sure.

Help me figure out what he really needs to spend his money the wisest.

I would try going to gamestop, they have used XBOX 360's there. He can get more games and more "stuff". A big hard drive really doesn't matter since it is just used to save games and profiles.

Thats where we are trading in his old Wii games. Can't use WalMart Gift Cards at Gamestop or we would be there!

I know a bit about gaming consoles but haven't actually used the 360 (i have the old xbox)

Does he play online? Multiplayer?

For a non-sophisticated gamer, you don't need anything too fancy. The cooling unit is probably not needed (depending on how often and how long he plays). As for the hard drive, it also depends: what will he store on it? Again, you probably don't need a huge one.

OK mom,

Take him to gamestop. Buy all his walmart cards from him, so he will have the cash. I do this for my kids all the time. Plus, You can use them to get cheaper gas at Walmart!!!

OK, Princess, here's the deal. I love my 360. My company got me one while I was healing, and I have fallen in love with it. However, it's being shipped back to me from the XBox company because, though the 360's are the workhorses, they are prone to software breakdowns.

Get the cooling thingy, it will get hot. The 20G hard drive's OK. You don't need anything bigger. Xbox live silver's OK. You can get gold for 3 months free when you start up, so you can see if you want to keep spending that $$$ every month. The blue tooth ear piece is a little over the top. For online gaming, it depends on how fast your internet connection is. Gaming can and will slow down depending on connection speed. The keyboard's kinda like the bluetooth. It's a bit much.

Basically what I'm saying here is to keep it simple and work your way up if you want to. I say this because, if you're not careful, you could spend anywhere from $600 - $1000 before you walk out of the store on something he can very easily and quickly outgrow or get bored with.

dont forget to modify it with a soft mod so you dont have to pay an arm and a leg for games!

Might as well go in the store and steal the games. You have to be pretty advanced anyway to make copies.

I have an Xbox 360 Elite. The main difference is the larger hard drive and HDMI capability. I have used 20G of the hard drive space because I downloaded a game from Xbox live. It's a good, cheap source for older games. Other than that, a 20G should be fine. If you get a memory card, there's plenty of storage on that. I don't have the cooling thingy, and haven't had any problems. I have set my Xbox to shut down automatically after so many hours of being idle. Kind of a necessity since I don't always have time to go thru a complete shutdown when tones go off. I haven't had any software problems or any other issues in the year that I have had it.

I was on xbox live until recently. I just haven't bothered to connect my xbox to the net since I moved. I pay around $10/month for my live subscription. And, the headset that came with my Xbox works just fine for me.

I recently purchased my first XBOX 360 not too long ago and I was in the same position as you. I ultimately opted for the XBOX 360 Arcade version, which was the cheapest and retailed for $279.99. It doesn't have a HD, but comes with a memory card that you plug into the front of the console. The memory card is no where near full and I've played online with the free 3-month trial and have many saved games between NHL '08 and Call of Duty 4. It works for me, but I'm just a very casual gamer and only have 4 games. ;)

Get the 20 GB system, the cooling system and Live-Silver.
Everything else is unneeded. Oh... HALO ROCKS...
There is an XBOX at one of my stations and my coworkers and I play an average of 3 hours each shift before lights out if we arent running like mad after dinner...
Heck even my medical director will stop in and play. (I have a cool MD)

wrestling over cod4? BLASPHEMY!!!!!

Just get the one with the 20 gig hard drive and youll be fine. As long as you have the hard drive, wireless and hi-def cables itll be fine. They are getting a little confusing now with the halo edition and the elite, and the arcade. If you are going to go online than pay for the gold membership for $50/year. Youll probably get into it and want to go online anyways.

eh ive heard bad things about the cooling systems. Like they suck up too much power from the xbox and end up frying your system. Dont take my word for it. i dont really know.

oh ya and I HIGHLY recomend buying it at somewhere like best buy and get a EXTENDED WARRENTY. Its like 60 bucks, but if it breaks they give you everything new for free. I used it once already.

get the 20 gig...if you get a cooling fan that doesnt plug into the xbox usb port for power. make sure the cooling fan has its on power supply or there has been reports of it frying the xbox. i have the 20 gig and love it

Both above are correct. The old cooling system sucked and destroyed units. The newer cooling systems have their own power cord. Check this before you buy. Ditto on the warranty
