Greetings everyone! Like I said in an earlier post, I'm graduating in May and looking to move some time afterwards. My girlfriend has applied to a few separate PhD programs across the Midwest and South, and since I'm interested in EMS I've been looking for jobs in the areas where she's applied to. The thing is, I've noticed it's kind of tough to find EMS companies or departments if you don't know where to look on the web.

So, below is a short list of everywhere I may end up come the summer or fall. Any directions pointing the right way would be fantastic--for example, the names of some companies that work in the area and/or recommendations of which to apply to and which to stay away from. Thanks.

Lincoln, NE
Baton Rouge, LA
Bloomington, IN

After a few quick google searches, here's what I found...

Lincoln, NE...
Lincoln Fire & Rescue
Rural/Metro Inc.
Midwest Medical Transport Co.

Baton Rouge, LA...
A/C Ambulance
Acadian Ambulance Service, Inc.

Bloomington, IN...
Bloomington Hospital Ambulance Service

A few quick searches and you'll find the info you need. Remember, google is your friend.

Don't work for Rural/Metro! If they're as horrible there as they are in Florida, stay far, far.....FAAAAAAR away!

I just did my ride-along in Bloomington, and there are two hopspitals with ambulances. Bloomington Hospital (BHAS) has been there forever and is part of the 911-system; Monroe Hospital is brand-new and not yet a part of the 911 system (but working on it). Interestingly, when the BHAS ambulances pick someone up, they ask which hospital the person wants to go to.

Save your money, find out where she is going, then go there and find a job.

Otherwise you will not know where you should apply and waste a lot of time. Use yout time instead to build up a nestegg for a scouting trip there, moving expenses, for getting a place to stay...maybe an engagement ring?;)

In Baton Rouge you have the Municipal Service where I work, East Baton Rouge EMS and one private service, Acadian Ambulance. EMS is an all Paramedic service. If you are an EMT your only choice is Acadian for pre-hospital work. The hospital ER's do hire EM's as ER techs.

Lincoln, NE -- One accredited paramedic school in the entire state, and it is an hour away in Omaha.

Baton Rouge, LA -- EMS is stuck in the 1980's statewide. Only one accredited paramedic school in the southern part of the state, and it's in New Orleans. Several EMS opportunities in the area, and quite a few non-emergency ambulance companies too, but I can't imagine someone with a Bachelor's Degree stooping that low. Horrible roads. Hot, humid weather. High concentration poor, uneducated population.

Bloomington, IN -- nice town full of hott chicks and good times. Cold as heck in the winter and a lot of rain in the summer. One accredited paramedic school in Bloomington. Many more across the state, but not really close.

Just a few things to consider, since you plan to make EMS a serious career.

That is one opinion of Louisiana that I disagree with.

The National EMS Academy is fully accredited and operates throughout South Louisiana and will graduate about 100 Paramedics and 200 Basics each year. Additionally, Acadian Ambulance Service is always looking for qualified applicants throughout the southern portion of the state in six locations, and offers relocation assistance, as well as a sign on bonus.

At any rate, I recomemnd you gather info from several sources. Check out the web: www.nationalemsacademy.com and www.acadian.com.

Besides, we have great food!
