Hi all,

I am new here and need a bit of advice please. I have British qualifications roughly equivalent to an Advanced EMT and have recently moved to Texas. I am trying to get on the UT Southwestern Paramedic program but would like to know what application competition is like?

I am aiming to get on it in April 2015, but read by law they only accept 10% of 150 students from out of state/country. So my question is:

1- has anyone else applied, interviewed, completed their course (if so any info/pointers please)
2- how many slots per course usually goto fire department?

Thanks in advance,
Cheers!

My own impression of the program is that it's a very good program -- the word on the street about it is very positive. I did not personally believe that admission was all that difficult, but I'm just relying on what I've heard.

My big question would be: Will they accept a foreign EMT qualification? As far as I know, by law (Texas law?) you need to be an EMT-Basic before you can go through paramedic school. So I'm wondering how they would regard a foreign qualification, and whether you would be legally eligible for admittance.

I realize this may not help tremendously, but I did want to at least point out that their program seems to be an excellent based on all accounts. Another well-regarded course is the one put on by UT's San Antonio area school, The University of Texas Health Science Center -- their paramedic program is very highly regarded. Good luck!

I'll second this... but I'm a bit biased :P

Thanks for the responses guys, I managed to squeeze in my emt-b/nremt course from ucla a year ago so that part is taken care of. I was worried about the amount of FD positions on the course they give. I've applied 8 months in advance and been told there 'might' be free slots for the April course depending on how I score- so other than HS Diploma (which I finished 12 years ago!) I dont really have anything they can score me on- strange!

and if there was any room for lowly civilians such as myself lol. Ill look into UT San Antonio also.

Thanks again!
