Hi, I'm a 54 year old woman who is a week away from paying my school fees to become an EMT. I really want to do this and I think I would be good at it but in my quest to getting stronger and fitter, I've developed tennis elbow. Can I still work in the field or do I have to give up now. Help!

If your doctor expects your bursitis to resolve completely in the next few months, and you're otherwise fit enough and strong enough to lift fat people and carry heavy bags, then yes, you'll be fine. Don't give up if this what you really want. In the end, it will be worth it.

Former EMT who developed lateral epicondylitis from baysitting!

The cure is REST until it is better, and you won't get that lifting litters. It will tend to reoccur. Talk to your doctor, then make a decison.
There are more than one conditions which all are called "tennis elbow"; they can include bursitis, epicondylitis, tendonitis, insult or entrapment of the nerves near the elbow (usually distal, not always), arthritis, chip fractures, even ligament damage or early cancer. See you doctor, figuer out what it takes for you to get and stay well, then go from there; after almost three months self-limited lifting, I still have trouble and three hours watching my granddaughter cost me about half of the following day with discomfort.

Screw the doctor. Get a lawyer.

It's the only way you're ever going to make any money in EMS.

Thanks guys-I figure I'll nurse this elbow and try to make it better and just go for it-in the end I think it's better to go for what I want and go down kicking and screaming. I appreciate your insight.
