I`m really really stuck..

I got accepted to my local college for med class. But I also have a open invite to the school where i went to emt school. A lot of my old class mates are going back there and i dont want to miss out cause we had a good grp but I dunno because most departments seem to look down on private schools. Atleast from what i`ve been told. I already have a AS degree and Maybe I would want a EMS degree but i`ve been told a fire degree is better since thats what I want to do. I am 30yrs old and If I cant get into a department by the time i`m 33 I would look into nursing school. So I guess what I am asking is what is better a private school or community. My cumminity college would be 2 days a week 10-2 with a hr break.. and the private school would be from 9-1 two days a week. Both schools offer online classes.. PLease someone show me the LIGHT!!!!! Ems Acadadmey Or Broward community college.

also...

SInce there are no jobs really down here I would be looking out of state. I will try for my NREMT-P but what would look better on a out of state resume a private school or a community?

In my experience it really doesn't matter as long as it is accredited. That is the most important factor that you will want to look into. I am also having trouble understanding how going to school for 6 hours a week is possible - are you sure that is correct? Most medic schools run around 1100 hours of training and at 6 hours a week......you are talking about a 3.5 year class. I didn't know that was offered.

Either way good luck!

accredited how? for college credits? The private school is accredited for the state.. I can sit down and take my state test I just wont get any college credits for the class.. Not now anyways they are however trying to work with getting credit towards college classes.

The private school is 2 days a week at 4 hours a day.. So 8 hrs a week plus there is alot of stuff online (online classes)

In the end, you get an NREMT-P/state P-card/County P-card. They all look the same no matter where you went. Go to a place that you think is the best fit for you. If you apply to an FD as a FF/PM, the local departments might have some preconcieved thoughts about the school, but if you interview well and have the medic skills to not get canned on probation than you will be fine.

I'm sorry, clarification. Med class = Medical School or a Paramedic Program? That changes the picture slightly...

I believe they stated EMT-P. By accredited I mean certified by CAA-HEP and CoAEMSP. These certifications generally make higher quality schools that are regulated and have taken the time to meet certain educational standards.

I don't know how long it will take you to finish school at 6hrs a week. But right now I am finishing up 1 semester of medic school. We have class and lab from 0900-1600 2 days a week, 1 online class, and 14hrs of ride time a week. My next semester is gonna be, class and lab 0900-1700 2 days a week, 1 online class, 12hrs a week of hospital clinicals, and 14hrs a week of ride time. There has to be more to it than 6hrs a week.

The community college is 16mos long..

My first semster is going to be from 10:00 to 16:00. Two days a week with online class for A&P + ride time. I`ve also just applied for the local volly department which will help me get more hands on. The next three terms will be class 2-3 days a week plus hospitals and clinics

Before you make a decision, I think it's important to decide first if furthering your education is more important to you than a better experience at medic school because of personal friends that are also attending.

While I have the highest respect for all forms of College education, the bottom line is that private schools that are nationally accredited instead of regionally have a lower probabilty of having their credits transferred on a university level. This may hinder you if your next step is to pursue a fire science and/or nursing major.

Try to factor this along with the other important things like costs, program duration etc. I'm sure you'll make the right decision either way.

Thanks everyone so far for your advice. I have chosen to go to the community college for a few reasons.

1. One being the start date. I just found out today my dad has cancer of the vocal cords. They found it early and they gave him a 95% chance to fully recover but he will need help with treatments and emotional support. I am the only family he has.

2. The sparseness of local FF/medic opening wants me to get my A.S in fire science or EMS just for more of a one up on other people. I figure having two degrees, interviewing very well and know people will help.

3. Hours and hands on. The private school although knowing the instructors I think rushes you through. Its only a 11mo program what will i be missing compared to the 16mo course?

4. The friends in my emt class are short term friends. I dont call them and I dont hang out with them. The ones that I considered actual friends are going to fire school or persuing other interests. My emt school also passed a few people who had no business passing but thats beside the point.

I still am going to write out a summary of what was covered in my emt school for people looking to go to emt school as soon as I get the time.

Thanks again for the time and advice.
