The new "mystery respiratory virus" outbreak

We received a department wide email from our medical director. Basically just a recommendation to ensure we continue to use respiratory precautions with patients and are aware this could be coming to our area as well.

In Ontario, Canada, patient care standards now include (since the 2003 SARS outbreak) the use of oxygen therapy masks that are outfitted with expiratory filters. These masks don't replace the PPE but provide an additional layer that traps exhaled particles at the patient level. Its interesting that the CDC and most state infection control recommendations talk about placing a filter in the circuit once the patient is intubated, but everything up that point allows exposure.
