Hello everyone I'm new to these boards but was hoping to get some useful information before I enroll in school. Im making a HUGE career change into this field and probably, from what I hear about to take a huge paycut with it!

I found my local community college to have EMT Paramaedic phase 1-3 classes. I guess im confused as to how the training process works. If im wanting to be strictly a paramedic do I have to take all the basic EMT classes first? I called the community college but cant get a call back!!Frustrating!! The phase one courses seem to be a 4 month long program. What is the average time frame for becoming a Paramedic?

Yes you have to get your Emt-Basic (passing the class, passing NREMT-b testing; Computer based testing as well as Praticals-some classes include this in the program, and as well as abtaining a state liscense)
Depends on what schools you go to, where I am from 18 months is the normal program for Paramedic, there are excelerated programs 9 months. The 4 month first phase I am thinking they are talking about is your Emt-Basic coarse..
Hope This Helps

Thanks for your help. There are 3 phases so what Im thinking is that if I pass phase 1 that I would be considered an EMT basic? There are 2 other phases involved...hmm maybe I should keep calling the college till I get a call back!! From what I hear is that most people go for Paramedic level because EMT pay is horrible!! I wonder how true that is?

Pay isn't the greatest as a basic, but as a medic you have a lot more responsibility as well. That's not saying medics get paid a fortune either... which they don't.

In the state of Texas, you have to be certified an EMT-B before being a medic. Most colleges integrate basic class into their medic degree.

Some colleges let you test as an Intermediate halfway through your program so you get more pay then a basic and get to do some advanced procedures, that way if you fail medic school it wasn't all a wash.

As an example for UTSA Health Science Center's program it is broken down into emt-b and emt-p. With emt-p being 33 semester hrs. that can be taken either full or part time. Like Linuss said UTSAHSC emt-p program lets you test for emt-i with successful completion of two semesters of the emt-p program.

As far as time frame emt-b 1 semester, emt-p 2 if full time 4 if part time. (UTSAHSC program)

I didn't find much searching through accd of their program, but here are two links I found helpful:
