I am a few weeks into my EMT-B course. It's going well, but moving so quickly given that it's a summer course. I have been able to keep up with the knowledge and skill based instruction, but I don't feel prepared for the practical realities like finding work, how to get into an ems system in other regions, mainting a license (continuing ed) etc. We don't devote any class time to this, and I worry about what happens after the class is over.

Nevertheless, I really respect and enjoy my instructor. I invited him out to lunch next week, and he accepted. I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn a little more from a real veteran - he's been in EMS for more than 30 years. I'd appreciate any input on what to ask or what to avoid!

Ask him about opportunities for extra clinical/ride time. He might know some people you can ride out with even before you officially start your ride alongs. The sooner you start riding the sooner you meet people in the field. It's never too early to start building a network.
