Hey guys! emtlife.com newbie here. I am starting school in a few days at NCTI for my EMT-B. Any helpful hints or ideas to help the 1st few days go smooth? I have no idea what to expect. So far they have told me to complete the chapters 1,2,5 in my book and I did 1,2,3,4,5 Woops! . Everything from study habits and note taking strats or just a heads up would help.

Thanks , Nick

Drop out. Go back and take both semesters of college anatomy & physiology. Then go take the EMT-B course afterwards. The course will be ten times easier, and you'll be twice the EMT that you would have been without that preparation.

I know you won't do that, but you did ask for advice. That's the best advice you could possbly get. Good luck.

oh you can just do what i did and take a&p I and II after emt school and still be better than the emts that don't want to further their education.

Without a doubt! But still not as good as you could have been.

Already done :) i finished all my basic classes including those two.

I enrolled in EMT-B at the local community college and celebrated my 72nd birthday midway through the class. Got an A for the class and scored 99 on the final exam. Got my ticket. Never worked harder or studied more in my life. Studied the lessons ahead of time. Went through all of the workbook exercises and re-studied the material on any workbook session I did not ace. Also went through all of the on-line sessions. Some the chapters were more difficult than others for me and those I had to read several times before I got it straight. We used the Jones/Bartlet book. If I can do it, anyone can!

You rock! Go directly to the head of the class. Once you finish EMT school, don't even wait for the ink to dry on your card before enrolling into a quality paramedic school.

Congratulations! Your going to fly through EMT school, and be thirsty for more afterwards. Very cool.

Good for you. It's not too often you hear of someone in their 70's that's posting on a forum.

Good to hear these stories.

i am about to finish up my emt-b class i take my state practicals next saturday to get my cert. =] i promise you i didnt take a&p and i still averaged a 90%. Everyones different though everyone has a way of doing things, and what worked for them. I was as scared as you and i lucke dout i got an amazing funny teacher and things went very well. i even made friends even though that wasnt why i came to the class. I just want to save lifes =]. so good luck and have fun. youll get addicted pretty quickly.

my 1st day of class today. went great! i am itching to go to my next one. the teacher is amazing. She breaks things down so that we are geared to passing the class on a national level, not state. I was even able to convince the fellas doing the ride alongs to let me get an extra 2 or 3 12hr shifts in. (limit was supposed to be 2). boy i cant wait! After the lecture i heard today about some of the things we get to do and the lifestyle we will be living.....the 40% paycut i will be getting once i am hired on doesnt even factor in anymore. I just want to wake up everyday knowing that i have the chance to give somebody's loved one a 2nd chance at life.^_^

It is going to be very difficult to find a 911 job after class. EMT classes turn out about 30 EMTs a semester/60 a year, when there are only one to ten 911 jobs that open up in your area a year, even if you are willing to travel a bit.

The purpose of their recommendation is not that you need A&P in order to pass your EMT-B class, but that it will help make you a better EMT. Believe it or not, your EMT-B class did not fully educate you for the job you may or may not be taking in the field. Believe it or not, many EMT-B classes are little more then advanced first aid. A&P is on step closer to being prepared for what you may encounter in patient care.

i was simply stating that i didnt take a&p and i did fine. I also said that everyone does it dfferently and goes about it differently. Im not at all opposed to furthering your education and taking w/e course you can take to help you out. Im just starting so i also plan to take a&p and anything i can get my hand son to educate me and help me understand my job better. im all for it

I never said it was. I simply stated that I didnt take A&P and i passed fine. I also stated that everyone does it differently. I agree that taking other courses such as A&P will help you. Im all for furthering and enhancing on your skills with an education. And I understand where your coming from cause I agree I just wanted to reassure them that its not the end of the world if you didnt take A&P first.

Anatomy

Good evening, my name is Ty. I am brand new to the forum just signed up last night. I have been reading a lot about anatomy and physiology and decided that this would be a good forum to ask you guys about it. I am starting my EMT-B class in 5 days. I have no prior knowledge of anatomy and physiology. I wanted to know if I could get through paramedic training with the little knowledge I will receive in EMT-B and good study habits through paramedic. I was going to take a couple college a&p courses but figured why do that if I am going to learn it in medic school anyway. If I maintain good study habits throughout the paramedic training would I be fine? Thanks for your time guys. This is such a great opportunity to be able to learn from those of you who have already been there and done that.
Thanks again,
Ty

You don't learn it in medic school. That's why any medic school that is worth attending requires college A&P as a prerequisite. If you want to be a passably decent paramedic, take it (and a lot more). If you just want to be just another minimally trained monkey doing things to human bodies that you have very little understanding of, but thinking you are awesome out of ignorance, then don't take it.
