Phone Line Life Line

By Graham Winch

Everyone knows paramedics, police and firemen can be heroes.
But did you know dispatchers and can team up with bystanders on the phone to save lives too?

Anchorage Fire Department Dispatchers are going through some special training to teach them how to give better instruction to callers.

AFD dispatchers can talk callers through some very complicated life saving techniques.

When this training is complete dispatchers will be able to instruct anyone how to give the latest CPR compressions, and they will be able to delivery a baby over the phone even if it is an abnormal childbirth.

When someone calls 911 and reaches the Anchorage Fire Department's Emergency Dispatch System it’s stressful, but dispatchers can reach through the phone line and provide that first vital lifeline.

..........

This won't include rescue breathing.

AFD’S Medical Director Dr. Michael Levy said,

"We are transitioning to a new method to unless the person already knows CPR. They will be simply directed to provide chest compressions until our medics get there."

Tallman said, "A very typical example here is a 65 year old male that suddenly collapse or is found not breathing. Given no other extenuating circumstances we probably go to compressions first."
