TAMPA - Paramedics helped save the life of a 54-year-old runner who collapsed today morning during the Gasparilla Distance Classic.

Tampa Fire Rescue medics Mike Campbell and George Nelson were watching runners at Bayshore and El Prado boulevards about 8:25 a.m. when people yelled that someone had collapsed.

Spectators had started cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the man, whose name has not been released. Campbell and Nelson then used a cardiac defibrillator to revive him.

Cool story bro, but its not really that special. The medics were covering the event, so they were just doing their jobs. I would more expect to see something like,

"Medics at race refuse to treat green-skinned lizard runner from Peruvia"

or something like that.

A ROSC due to location is still a ROSC, and it's always good when the news (despite journalist having the IQ of 60) touts the benefits of bystander initiated CPR and quick defib.

What, I didn't waste 3 months of my life on 5K standbys? As a runner, I'd really like to know what kind of shape that guy was in.

Sometimes I want to get a stress test, just to see where I stand. I'd really hate to drop dead in a race.

My resting HR is 54-64, but during a race I regularly clock in at 200+. This has worried me on occasion but so far I haven't died.
