Hi all,

I'm a newly qualified EMT in Ireland. I want to train as a paramedic but unfortunately my chances of doing so here are very slim as the only way to train is through the national health service (the HSE) - and if you haven't heard we're in a recession and they're making cutbacks to an already struggling health service.

I'm considering training abroad and was thinking about the USA, specifically NYC because I have friends there. So I'm looking for your advice on whether this is a possibility or even a good idea! I have a degree and a Masters in sport science and nutrition as well, not sure if that'll help though as at the moment I have little or no experience as an EMT. I'm going to join a voluntary organisation here to try and get some though. I was just wondering about the following:

Will my EMT qualification be recognised there? It's a PHECC qualification (Ireland's pre-hospital emergency care council).

How much does it cost to train there roughly?

Any comments/advice?

Another wannabe paramedic,

Polly

I would suggest contacting the nremt.org NREMT is our national EMS registry that certifies EMT's and Paramedics. New York is one of the few states that is not a national registry state that I am aware of.

Then contact the state EMS office is where your interested in obtaining reciprocity.(example, NY) Each state has there own rules for reciprocity.

Agree with this.

I live in a NR reciprocity state (Georgia).

Cost depends on where you go for schooling.

All NYC programs offer the NREMT-P because its required for medic who wish to work in NJ. Many NJ emts train in NYC for that reason.

LaGuardia Community College, St. John's and CUNY BMCC all offer associates degrees and one can test both NY and NREMT-P.

Cost is around $8000 to $9000. I am guestimating. Check their websites.

You will have to get your NY EMT-B first to be in the programs and get your A&P 1 & 2. The EMT class is apart of the degree programs.

Thanks for the info. I'll contact the NREMT and see what they tell me. Those fees seem reasonable enough, it seems to be much more expensive in Canada. If I completed the training over there are there jobs available? What is salary like?
