It's been a lot of years since I engaged in shop talk online, but I need some advice - and I figured I'd go to the best source - medics still on the job. I hope this is the appropriate sub-forum to post on. If not, I'd ask that the staff please move my thread to a more appropriate location.
I was a medic in Chicago for over a decade, also supplemented my income working for a private. We did a lot of TPs in and out of nursing homes, so I had a pretty good handle on which ones made the grade and which ones I wouldn't dump my worst enemy in. Ten years have passed since I made my last run, I no longer live in Chicago, and I've lost touch with most everyone I knew in the field - and now I'm trying to help my best friend's family out.
His grandma, located in the Edina, MN area, has to go into a nursing home. Family can't do home-care, she was in Assisted Living for a while but her health has deteriorated to the point where she needs full-time nursing care. Suffice it to say, I'm not about to rely on state test scores - some of the biggest dumps in Chicago had the best scores.
No, I'm looking for opinions from the people who know best - the medics doing TPs in and out of the facilities.
So my question, I guess for any Medics in the Minneapolis area is: If you HAD to find a place for someone you loved, where would it be?
And I guess my question for anyone else who might know: Do you know of additional sites that have the real scoop on what's going on in these facilities? Not the state-sponsored stuff, not the "this rating site is really owned by a nursing home conglomerate but we're not gonna tell you that" stuff, but the place where Medics, Hospice workers, etc. are talking about the facilities they're moving in and out of.
Any other thoughts you all might have to offer would be welcome. I'll be doing a lot of research into this over the next few days - and in the meantime, I'm hopeful that reaching out like this might also offer some place to start.
I appreciate your indulgence in letting me post this question. I usually don't join a discussion community just to ask for assistance - this is a first for me, but this is such an important decision and one that can so easily turn out badly, that I honestly felt it needed to be done. I'm grateful for any advice or thoughts you might care to share with me.
All my best and gratitude for your help - on the job and off,
Wings
