Hi Everyone,

I have been lurking on this site for over a year.. I am posting because I have found information on this site to be informative and interesting. I like to hear about all the different stories between each agency as well as EMT's, etc.

No matter the distance between everyone, the objective remains the same.

You guys and girls are a dedicated bunch... cool.

FYI: I take my EMT B state exam in a little over a month...

I am more nervous about the practicals than written.

I do well in the class on weekly sample test (multiple choice), but I am still nervous about the practicals..

Any Advice?

Lets see.
Take your time as in don't rush it. But don't do over your limit. We have a 15 minute limit so I set out to do it in 10 to 12. People in class were doing in 5 to 6 minutes and forgetting things left and right.

(merge)yeah, take your time on the practicals, just not enought to be over the limit.(/merge)

Verbalize everything and make sure they hear you. I lost points for things I did and verbalized but the grader didn't hear.

Hi Pvac! Welcome to the tribe! The question is how did you do during your practice time in the skills lab? Ask questions now on what to except while testing. If things have been taught the same all during classtime, you should do well. Just remember, no question is ever stupid, if you do not understand what the proctor is asking, tell them you do not understand and please re-pharse or repeat the question. Everybody gets the test jitters, just remember to take a deep breath and relax. :)

Thanks!!

I appreciate the reply...

Yea, I need to focus and trust my training.

I am a bumbling fools sometimes when it comes to straps! Lol!

Thanks for the reply!

I do okay during the skills.. we have a huge class, so you can get stuck on the medical assessment for a long time.. depends.

I try to think over what I want to tackles first.. splinting, traction device, KED...

I save medical and trauma for last.. It's all about state protocols and indication/contraindications for administering meds..

Moderators note: I merged the two threads into one, and modified the replies.

Get someone to work with you and go over how to do straps. Over, and over, and over again. Like most things, repetition will help with those kinds of physical tasks.

I've spent time going over take the gurney out.. put the gurney in.. take it out.. put it back... When the student who was having trouble starts giggling about it being repetitious and silly, they have it down.. same with any of the tasks involving muscle memory, putting on a splint, hooking up an ekg, taking the blood glucose ( need a practice arm for this one)

Hi, pv welcome to our world.

OK 2 things to remember.

1. THE ONLY STUPID QUESTION IS THE ONE THAT IS NOT ASKED!

2. PRACTICE, PRACTICE , Oh and did I mention PRACTICE?

repeat and repeat again. do it with a partner. repeat everything out loud as if the instructor was there. make up a few senarios and role play. do ittill your blue in the face. its really not that bad. 70% or better is passing so dont lose your lid if you miss something. as long as you nail the critical points your good. cause if you miss one of those its an instant failure.
