Hello All,

I am a brand new member to the forum. I found this site through google and the fact that I am/was a member over at officer.com.

I am very versed in the process it takes to become a police officer, however, I have decided that it might not be for me. I am a fairly recent college grad with NO training in EMT whatsoever other than basic cpr/aed/ O2 training I received through a security job.

All that said, I just applied to a local fire department (very large) for the position of probationary EMT. This is a civil service position so its written, physical agility, oral boards, background investigation, etc.

What should I expect through this process? With no training to date am I completely out of my league? I plan to give this my all and love the idea of going through the academy/learning the ropes but I am really at a loss as to what I should be expecting.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

tl/dr: newbie asking training questions that have probably been answered but he cant find them with search option.

Well, first would be the emt basic class, then either intermediate or paramedic, whichever you prefer. What exactly are you wanting to know ? And when you say "very large" where are you talking about ? And how, if you are not an emt, did you apply for a probatioary emt position ?

The required minimum qualifications for Probationary Emergency Medical Technician are:

*
Must have a high school diploma or an appropriate high school equivalency.
*
Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-provisional, non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license with less than four points.
*
Must be at least 18 years old at time of application.
*
Must pass a physical examination, comprehensive background examination and a drug test.

Employees hired as Probationary Emergency Medical Technicians serve a probationary period of two years. Applicants are not required to possess any certificates or certifications to apply for probationary, entry-level EMT positions.

I am just wondering if anyone else has gone through this process and what I should expect, i.e., length of time from application to conditional offer of employment, academy life, etc. I didn't really see an area for employment questions, though it is very possible I missed it.

Never mind! I just received an email back from the recruiting team with a detailed list of expectations and when each step should tentatively take place. Thanks anyway!

The info you would have gotten here may not have helped anyway. This is a highly individualized process with every agency doing it their own way.
