Hey guys, couple questions about pacing with the LP12....

1) If you have only the pacing pads connected, but not the limb leads, you can still change the amps and pacing rate, correct? I was reading through the operator's manual, and I'm a little confused because it states, "If the monitor detects ECG leads off during pacing, pacing continues at a fixed rate until the ECG lead is reattached. During fixed rate pacing, the pacemaker delivers pulses at the set pace rate regardless of any intrinsic beats the patient may have." So, the way I understand this is that the LP12 can't read the patient's pulse rate w/o the limb leads attached, and will do non-demand pacing at whatever rate was set prior to the limb leads becoming detached.

2) If you pace with only the pacing pads but no limb leads connected, you won't see anything on the monitor, right?

Thanks!

This happened to me and it really freaked me out!

I'm not sure what I would have seen had I selected paddles view. I couldn't turn the Lifepak off fast enough because I wasn't expecting it to start pacing when the nurse removed the limb leads.

Very interesting. We still have one LP12 as a backup and have two LP15's for frontline use. The obvious question to me is, do the 15's do the same thing or has that been changed?

I'm googling for the answer but I thought I'd ask too.

Wow! Thanks for the feedback on this. Not sure how I missed that.

This is great to know. We still carry LP12s on my volunteer ambulances.

At work the city of new york has since switched to MRXs.

If the MRX is set in demand mode, and a lead falls off the alarm will go off and it will immediately stop pacing.

It is actually in our operating procedure that when we begin pacing, we set the machine to fixed that way if a lead falls off it will continue pacing efforts regardless.
