What do you love most about EMS?

What do you hate most about EMS?

If you were able to, how would you improve EMS? What do you think is the biggest problem in EMS as it is now?

Please, let's not get this locked due to squabbling.

I know there has been a few similar threads, but new people have been added to this board, and people can change their thoughts and opinions based on experiences.

Love: The challenge and the diversity
Hate: Burned out/intolerant co-workers
Improve: National regulating body with national standards for cert levels and standing orders for each level that all states have to abide by.
Biggest Problem: Too disorganized

What do you love most about EMS?
The challenges some patients present, the constant evolution of the profession, and the never-ending education one can receive.

What do you hate most about EMS?
System abusers

Make the requirements stricter, increase the didactic and clinical time needed to finish the class. Turn it from a certification to a licensure.

What do you think is the biggest problem in EMS as it is now?
Those that think the present system is adequate - paid or volunteer. Those people tend to not only provide substandard prehospital care, but fight to keep the standards as they are, and in some instances, watering them down due to time requirements involved.

1. Making a difference in peoples' lives. The occasional life you save. Flexible hours. Downtime in between calls is nice too.

2. The Good Ole Boys system. How everything is based on seniority rather than skill. How everybody talks about this golden EMS gem called "Experience" that only the person talking ever seems to have. System abusers. People who call us "ambulance drivers". How there doesn't seem to be some way to separate EMS from the ambulance business.

3. See #2.

#1 I have a genuine love of caring for people. I enjoy the challenge of being able to take a situation that can be trying and demanding and bring a sense of order, providing the best care possible and to be the patient's advocate.
I am a advocate of on going education and training, with hout these things we are unable to deliver the best care possible.
#2 As mentioned above I truly hate the "Good ol' Boys and Girl's club. I think it is VERY VERY Wrong to have a negative attitude with new staff. These folks have forgot what it was like to be the newbie, It is part of our responsibilities besides the patient care to encourage these new members of EMS, to learn and keep on learning, not eat them alive before the shift ends.
#3 Stricter rules for continuing education and training and mandatory EVOC training. There are still too many accidents, many that could have been avoided.
