Hi All,
I'm considering becoming an EMT and had a few questions. It seems like all the local (I'm in the Los Angeles area) ambulance companies are hiring and some even offering sign on bonuses. What can I expect to make when hired on? It is tough to convince the wife for a career change and paying for the EMT school tuition if I'm only going to make $10 per hour. It’s sad that I can make more money giving a dog a bath (I'm a dog groomer at the moment) than I can doing EMT work
My other question is how hard is it to get hired by a Hospital as an ER Tech? I have worked at a major hospital 10 years ago for 5 years.
Thanks to all that reply!

First off, all the ambulance companies are NOT hiring. Some of them may be. How much you make is better asked as a per year, not per hour, because well, per hour often depends on the type of shift you get. If 20,800 (10/hr X 40 hr/wk X 52 wk/yr) a year is not enough for you, then, you probably need to look somewhere else. For what it's worth, I personally work more than that, but not much, working in LACo.

As far as ER Tech, that depends. I heard some of them want you to have a year on the streets, some even want that year doing 911 instead of transfers, others will hire you right out of school, pay you MUCH better than you're gonna get on the street, and maybe even send you (pay for, and pay to attend) to vampire aka phlebotomy school.

As long as I love what I'm doing, I do not mind the pay cut. When I worked as an Orderly in the Hospital I loved it!!! I want back in the med field.

Any body know if new hires get to choose when and what shifts they work?

Expect to work for a private company, and expect to be treated fairly poorly. I hate to say it. You will make between 20,000-35,000 a year as a private EMT. Its difficult to go by hourly wages as said above because of overtime and how they pay their 24 hour shifts. If you advance to paramedic you can expect to make around 50,000 a year in LA private ambo-land.

I do work for an LA private company and let me tell you I am the bottom of the freaking scum pond. Its what you should expect for advanced first aid training. Continuously improve yourself by taking CE classes in areas of medicine you are not familiar with, become a EVOC certified ambulance driver, take FEMA courses online, and stay in college.

I had another question.
Do any of the Ambulance company's help pay for any paramedic training?
Tuition reimbursement?
Thanks.

Some do. My company offers very minor assistance, with strings. That's part of the benefits package they offer you.
