Hi, I am an advanced care paramedic student from Alberta, Canada. I am completing my first year of schooling for this program. I will then have my first practicum (10 tours) starting in August. my school supports students that would like to pursue a practicum outside of Alberta. My problem is that by support, they mean that they are willing to give the okay if you do all the work (fair enough).

Is it worth it for me to look for a practicum site in the states? Will I find anything and how do I pursue this? What are your thoughts on this and is it common? I hear stories about Detroit EMS and LA and think that this would be a great learning experience.

I have past experience in EMS and am currently pulling straight A's ( no arrogance just would like to prove I have a genuine passion for this career). I also have my fire 1001/1002's.

Hope this is in the appropriate section, it's international for me but not most of you.

If you think its worth it to you, you can give it a shot, however, I don't know what the visa situation is going to be for you to do clinical schooling for EMS in the US. I don't believe that this is a situation the government sees very often, so you might have a chance. Look into the visa situation first, and if that checks out, start contacting EMS agencies you might be interested in working with.

Keep in mind, this will still probably be a long shot, as you'll need to deal with the visa issue as well as finding a service willing to take you on.
