I was Google-surfing and happened across a link for this madness.

Krokodil (street name) is apparently a shorter, more intense high refined from codeine-based pain medication. From the Google Images, this thing is nasty.

Your thoughts? Has this been seen in the US?
 
Nasty stuff indeed. Drugs like this pop up when you shut down the heroin trade.
 
It is just another easy to make at home isomer.

It is more popular in Eastern Europe compared to here in central europe, but there are so many that I don't even remember the names of all of them.
 
Yeah unfortunately, it causes MASSIVE tissue necrosis. Like, imagine mixing dextrose, dopamine, and promethazine and giving a nice big subcutaneous bolus.

But people still use it. Amazing.

one of my collegues has a story where he was treating a drug addict and she chrushed her promethazine pill and put it in a syringe. He says he walked in the room just in time to see her give herself an IM injection of it.

He has some really cool pictures of the follow on wound care and the grafts worked really nicely.

Couldn't fill up the hole in her thigh it left though.
 
We have seen this stuff in small quantities here where I live, in Casper,Wy. I know thats hard to believe as we are out in the middle of nowhere, but it follows the HUGE meth trade that we have here. I work with a hospital based flight service here and we have actually transported a few people from oil rig locations that have taken this crap. The first time that I ran into it on a scene flight, the only reason I knew it was this was because I also work as a Tactical Medic and a DRE (drug recognition expert) for our Sheriffs office. I was really surprised when I saw it here, but low an behold here it is!

Drugs like that pop up. Like creating Cherry Coke (no pun intended) when Coke sales flag.

we just need more chemists who can make stuff pure. :P

Its like the guy in America who was making MPPP but had MPTP impurities. Those who injected it have irreversible Parkinsonism within hours (AKA their substantia nigra was shot).
 
No problem! These drugs are becoming more and more prevelant because we are doing a better job at putting the smack down on "conventional" drugs. When that happens designer drugs a made using small amounts of the hard to obtain "parent" drug, in this case cocaine. That is the reason why the recipe for Meth keeps changing, because we make it hard to find Psuedoephedrine, and the cooks find a new way to make the product.

So why keep putting the "smack down" on the safer options?
