I just completed my national registry a few weeks ago and I am now looking to get out of my current office job and into a healthcare related job. I should have my paramedic by January of 2011, but until then I would like a new job that will give me some valuable experience. The only EMT positions in my area pay about $9 an hour - and unfortunately that is not quite enough to pay my bills.

What other options does a certified EMT-B in Kansas have? Will hospitals hire an EMT? What positions should I be looking to apply for?

Yes, hospitals hire EMTs, usually as ER techs, and get paid quite a bit more then ambulance EMTs.

Water parks
Amusement parks
Industrial companies

If you need a certain pay to survive and $9/hr doesn't cover it, stay in your current office job and go per diem somewhere to get your experience. I don't know what pay is for a basic in Kansas or even how they are deployed (911/transfers). I don't know anywhere that pays a basic a survivable wage. Then again they pay paramedics survivable wages either.

The EMS service where I used to live in Florida pays a basic pretty good, last I knew it was like 15 an hour but theyre on a hiring freeze now.
