so i just recently got employed for a county ems position, and today is my third day on the job. I am riding out 3rd person for now, until i get about 30 shifts under my belt. The first day was extremely busy, we had 3 transports back to back to back, and i was loving it. On one particular transport, the patient was having a minor MI, and just needed to go to the hospital in wichita. Her condition started to get worse, so the medic was doing all she could to maintain control of the situation(which she was doing an excellent job by the way) while i sat next to the patient taking vitals and what not. Well, the patient was getting extremely anxious and reached out and grabbed my hand and squeezed, it was at that moment when i realized how great this job is going to be for me! I held her hand for about 5 more minutes and then i rechecked her vitals, and as soon as i was finished taking vitals she grabbed my hand again squeezing hard, and i just... felt... i think those who have been through this know what i am talking about. I know for a fact now that i am definitely in the right career! Thanks for all the support guys and gals!

Errr...???

Anyhow, glad you're enjoying it thus far. Sometimes, all a patient, or their family, requires is a hand to hold or a shoulder to cry on. One of the few times you do nothing, yet did the right thing.

Print out your post here and hang it in your locker, because there are going to be days, many of them to be exact where your never going to want to see the inside of an ambulance again, wont believe what a stupid decision you made for choosing ems as a career and probably want to quit on a daily basis.

When your having one of those days take that post out and read it, it will help you remember the reasons you became an emt.

That is very true, im sure at some point i get a little worn down at this job, and some support would be great, i really like that idea, and as a matter of fact im getting ready to print it out now. thanks for the advice!

and i guess i should have put AMI vs MI, i just meant to say Myocardial Infarction, the only reason why it was considered minor initially was because we transferred her from the local hospital to wichita and she was drugged up on morphine and walking around, well once the morphine started to wear off things got worse so... thats what i meant by MI, i guess Acute Myocardial Infarction is the appropriate term
