And I am so freaking nervous! I will be with a volunteer QRU and feel really intimidated. Not so much from the people (well, maybe a little) but mostly that I feel like I know absolutely nothing yet. I feel really weak at vitals and just feel like my memory of all of the things I have learned is going to fail me.
Please tell me this is normal and that I will survive ;)

Getting good at vitals, assessments, treatment, etc, comes with time. Don't sweat it too much, and just remember that it's not your emergency. You really start learning how to do the job once you are out doing the job :)

Best of luck!

You are weak and they will eat you alive.

Just kidding. Yeah it's normal. Your gonna suck at first so just make up for it with lots of scraping and groveling. Ask questions but try not to ask dumb ones (this is tricky). Don't be afraid to admit you can't get a BP, also don't be afraid to try a few times. You really don't know anything yet but if you have good partners they will help you. Watch everything, try everything, touch and use everything. Don't be afraid to put your hands on the patient (this was one of the harder ones for me) you have to touch them to treat them.

Just remember that your patients are counting on you. They'd much prefer to have someone who is willing to ask for help when they need it than someone who would rather just pretend they know what they're doing and get in over their head. Use your resources, you have partners, field guides and medical control. Most of all just relax. Nobody is perfect at first and everybody spends the first few weeks wondering what the heck they just did on the last call. Just try to do better every call and you'll feel pretty comfortable before too long! Have fun!
