Hi, I am actually a police officer, however I got on this forum because my fiance is wanting to become a paramedic. I was just wondering what the outlook for jobs is....specifically in the Austin Texas area. If anyone could enlighten me I would appreciate it. She is a medical assistant now and has just started the 18 week EMT courses. She had originally planned on being a nurse, but has now changed her mind. Is this a good choice over RN? Also, where do I find listings for paramedic jobs and such. I have been on like 911 hotjobs and stuff, but from what I see there don't seem to be that many openings.

She should start out with an EMT-B course and work 6 months to a year as that. If she likes it, she can move onto the paramedic course which typically takes 2 years and results in an associates degree.

If she doesn't like it, the skills that come with the EMT-B certification are very handy in the ER if she wants to become a nurse instead. Most ER's will take EMT-B volunteers as well, so she can use that certification to volunteer and try out the ER.

Either way you put it, the EMT-B is the best way to start.

Some States require that ED technicians be EMT's.... some Hospitals prefer to hire EMT's as ED techs because they know what to do and can take care of patients.

Hey Bruddah!! I can tell you as a police officer/paramedic........... EMS has always taken care of my family.

She can use medic as a stepping stone to RN, but I wouldn't reccomend it. EMS is just like copin' once you are bit by the bug it is all over.
