Hi There

My name's Anthony and I currently live nr. Glasgow in Scotland. Now, first of all, I am NOT currently an EMT/Paramedic etc. but have a background in nursing (equivalent of an LVN in the U.S.). The reason that I am posting is this: My wife is originally from Evansville, Indiana and she has lived here in the U.K. for the last three years. We are thinking about moving to the U.S. in the next year or so and when we arrive I would be interested in doing my EMT-B training.

Obviously because I am not from the U.S., I would be interested to hear what you think my chances of getting a job after my certification are? (Esp. in KY, IN, TN, IL areas) I don't know whether it is quite tough to get a job after your training... Hopefully you guys can help. I have a lot of experience within all areas of the hospital, including e.r., surgery, pediatrics, etc. I would probably be undertaking the 2 week intensive course.

Any help or other info that you could offer would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Anthony

Provided you become a legal resident, not much of a problem at all.

The only difficulty I see is whether there are volunteer agencies doing 911 or not. I don't think you will have a problem finding a transport job.

My personal opinion is if your going to do EMS for a living, your better off becoming a parmedic.

I can tell you that in central IN you wouldn't have any problems at all finding an EMS job. It would most likely be with a transport company and the pay would be beyond dismal, but you would be able to find work. You would probably be better off working as a patient care tech or something similar in one of the hospitals while going to medic school. It would take longer to get through school, but in the long run, it would be your best bet.

Hey thanks for responding.

Obviously all my visas/legal residency requirements etc. would all be met. Further to what you were saying about volunteer agencies; would that mean that they would cover all 911 calls in that area? Is there ways of finding out who has the contracts for 911 calls in particular areas?

Pardon my ignorance, but it's handled differently to how it is here :)

It is handled differently from locality to localty in the each state of the United States. So its different everywhere. There is almost always a paid transport service though.

I live in Rockland County, NY. The local municpalities contract a volunteer ambulance agency to cover 911 calls with a paid ALS fly car. A paid ambulance corp. does BLS transports from medical facility to medical facility. Its the same in most of Westchester, NY with the exception of Yonkers. Yonkers has paid BLS and ALS units. NYC has the same as Yonkers.

You have to find the local municpality your moving to and others close by. See what they do specifically.

There's no clear cut answer. Some areas have BLS volunteers and ALS professionals. Others are all paid people. Still others are 100% volunteer, and others are a hybrid of paid and volunteer staff. In some places, the company that runs 911 calls does transfers, in others a private company handles transfers and a government funded service does 911 emergency calls.

There's no clear cut answer to your question; all that I can advise you to do is check out what the situation is where you want to work.

Welcome!! folks here will help you get started in the right direction! :) :) :)

In Florida there is shortage of nursing, but a good job search engine is indeed.com, basically it's a search engine of various search job engines.

BTW, my wife is from the Newcastle area.
