So our clinicals are done in the ED because we live in a rural-ish area and an ambulance service in town maybe gets 2-3 calls a night. Well my instructor has invited me to do a shift with her at her volunteer position. They have very low call volume (350 per year- small town) but I think it would be interesting, even if there are no calls.

I'm thinking this is a sign that she likes me and appreciates my enthusiasm that you all are bombarded with. :D

Sure, I think you should go for it! If you're still in clinicals, any exposure to real EMS calls is good. Go get a feel for it. Look around the truck and station, talk to the crews, and (hopefully) watch them as they handle a call.

What state and county is it?
It must be weird not having the radio go off constantly lol.

Were in rural South Dakota. ;) 'nuf said.

Well that's California! I live in the middle of NOWHERE. :)

I live in the biggest city- Sioux Falls. Its about 160,000 people. There is 853,000 in the entire state.

I may be shadowing in a smaller community, a town of 2,200 people.

Ouch I never realized how small your state is. You could always volunteer to work EMS for the bike rally in Sturgis. I'm sure you'd get plenty of exposure with penetrating wounds, C-spine and drunks. Probably a combination of the three at every call lol.

LOL- that would be fun. Its in the other side of the state though (6 hrs away) and with hotel costs absolutely skyrocketing... ;)

If you volunteer to work the event your lodging is usually free. I know cops that have volunteered to work it in passed years. You work 24hs and get a couple hours to rest on a cot and then back to work lol.

Sounds like an awesome time. Maybe I can sneak into the Buffalo Chip where all the good bands are playing (saw ZZ Top there a few years back, so much fun!)
