To get my enhanced, which in VA is a step up from basic. Does anyone else have this in their area? Our classes start in September.

I'm just getting done with the intro class here in Virginia Beach, and I'll say this: Let's hope you get a better teacher than I did. I went from having an overall 4.0 grade average to failing this class.

If it were just me, I would place the blame completely on my shoulders. But the class average is 55% right now, and there is only two students out of 28 that are passing with a 75% (minimum score allowed to test for Enhanced.)

She's a med student doing this on the side to pay for her student loans, and it's her first time teaching by her own admission. But says that she is making no allowance for the fact that her entire class is failing, even people who have previously been EMT-I and are just working toward their paramedic degrees. If we fail, it's our fault.

As you can tell, I'm pretty flustered right now. The weird thing is that she's not a bad teacher, and I've learned a lot just in this last semester. But she's a horrible tester, and the stuff on the test isn't to be found anywhere in the lecture, the powerpoints, or even in the paramedic-level book we were required to buy (most of us coming off BLS don't understand much in there.)

Ok, rant off. Just have to do my final and practicals next week, and hope the the Dean of Health Services notices her 98% failure rate and makes her work some mathematical magic to make us all pass.

PB...your there to learn, not be her class of mice to be experimented on. If I were you, I would call REMS or talk to a teacher who does teach these classes, as this is important you learn what you need to know so when your out on on the band-aide box, you are efficient. I would also take one or more of the tests and a few of the students and talk to someone. Good luck on that one, it must be VERY frustrating indeed.

If you need someone to talk to, pm me. Will try to help if I can.

PapaBear... you need to go to the head of the department BEFORE the class is over...that is crazy.

PB, sounds to me like the instructor is a newbie and is grading you on a level that of a Doc. Like said go above her head.

While that sounds like a great idea, she is a respected medic in the area, and the staff at the college is a pretty tight knit group. I go above her head, even with a bunch of folks, we are just going to pain big red targets on our tails for the rest of our training.

I'm waiting to see if a curve is going to happen or not. Right now I have to focus on passing the practicals anyway. I can do the intubations, injections, and IV's just fine, it's the med math I am worried about. No calculator is allowed, and me and math have a tenuous relationship at best.

That depends on how you do it. If you go to the admin with complaints about what a poor teacher she is and how everyone's failure is her fault, you are correct, people will jump to her defense and paint you as the villain. But, if you include the information about what a good medic she is, how the basic information she teaches, teaching style etc is good, but the testing is causing problems and maybe she needs some help with this skill, you are going to be seen differently. A good hint is to bracket your complaint with compliments. ie. "She's a great teacher, we really learn a lot in class, but her method of testing looks like it could really use some help from someone more experienced in teaching. I really hope something can be done to help her because I enjoy her classes and think with time and experience she'll be a great instructor. "
