Today I got to do a standby at a triathlon, and the water was so cold for the swim that we were pretty busy for the first hour, and ended up with a couple of people with more severe hypothermia (I was a little impressed with this guy: he was stumbling around looking for his bike, the race coordinators pulled him aside because he was uncoordinated...his temp was 92.4.)
Anyway, we had a great day, met a lot of cool people who had achieved something big for themselves, and earned a lot of money because apparently triathlon companies are made of money.
On the way home, I was flagged down in my QRV by a couple of road bikers. We are right on a bike route that people frequently use on cross-country tours, and these two guys were some retired cardiac surgeons, and one was having some trouble with being winded today. They had discussed it at length and wanted him to get together with his physician friends in the next city up the road and have him go to the ER.
He wanted to do this without leaving his bike 45 miles behind him on his cross-country trip, and so was hoping to find a taxi service that could do it.
Yeah, right. Rural central VA doesn't DO taxi services. So I discussed it with the hubby, and decided to load him up in the old 12 pass van that is my ride and drive him to town.
I had a terrific ride, learned about his world travels, his biking, his cabin in Canada (RUN, do not walk to medical school...seems worth it if you can handle the career! ).
And he was genuinely stuck in a bad spot when I found him, demanding nothing, would have worked his trouble out eventually...but I got to hang out with a really neat old guy, and my kid (who rode with me up to the city) got to learn that it's completely worth it to give a hand to people, whether it makes sense or not.
