Hello all im a NREMT-P, so I have been thinking about moving to florida for a new life and perhaps decent job. Any good services down there I know about Sunstar I guessing they are pretty big I have heard great things about them. Im currently in Cedar Rapids, IA and we are similair to there system we have EMD coding, System Status, ride Paramedic/EMT, similiar pay sunstar does start off a lilttle better though i think its about 15 an hr there if i saw it right, and yes we sit in parking lots also so that does not bother me at all( actually kinda fun we get to know PD alot better that way and get that great relationship!!!!) The surronding fire depts. also are paramedics just like down there they just don't transport. I have seen posts about FD's taking over Sunstar or wtv the fire dept here was going to do the same thing but realized after the flood (if you didnt here about that) here that they could not handle EMS calls without hiring way more people and that costs money haha. But sunstar seems huge and seems like they have there stuff together. Are there any other services down there that are good without fire being involved i wouldnt mind being a firefighter but I have recently felll in love with EMS more. Whats the cost of living around clearwater area or cheaper places that are decent living does not have to be great and glam for me I live in Iowa we have plenty of crime but I dont want to get shot or stabbed either haha. So it would be great if i could get feed back on SUNSTAR some other Companies there maybe even Fire Depts. if i need to also about cost of living and pretty much everything I know how the weather is there already so im good there haha DAMN SNOW will be starting here soon!!!! THANKS ALL. (I also already know about the STATE TEST also and heard its like the NREMT which is not to bad I thought)

We definitely have our share of violence in Florida. Maybe you should start reading the local papers online for Pinellas County.

Sunstar is part of a Public Utility Model EMS system.

No, the Florida exam is not like the NR. If you do not study that which is specific to Florida, you will fail.

Here's a good fairly recent article about Sunstar and Pinellas County EMS Authority.

For the cost of living you can find that out in the classifieds for real estate and rentals. Car insurance is expensive as is that for renters or home owners. Utilities are expensive because of the AC 8 - 10 months out of the year. Hurricanes are real as is flooding and tornados. We have it all to go with the sunshine.

If you have kids, our school systems are still messed up from the Jeb Bush time as Govenor. If I had school age kids, choosing a school for them now would be difficult.

On the bright side we don't pay state income tax.

Lee County EMS, to the south, is probably more stable at this time.

Lee county EMS is excellent but I have heard they are on a hiring freeze right now and arent accepting new applications.
