It's been a while since I posted anything here but I'm sure most of you we'll find these videos from YouTube interesting. -A change from the usual topics (vollies Vs. pros, armed EMS personnel, mishaps with RNs and LEOs, owning your personal rig, ...) :P ((Just kidding))

Most professional lifeguard services nowadays employ lifeguards certified as EMTs and above. Some agencies such as Los Angeles County and San Diego City even offer 24hr lifeguad/EMS response.

Besides lifesaving competitions, lifeguard tournaments and rescue exhibitions, some of the largest agencies from FL, CA and HI now organize and participate in EMS and/or BLS competitions like the ones shown.

As always, your expertise and comments are welcome. Don't forget to "always swim near a lifeguard" this summer.

You know...and if anyone knows otherwise, correct me if I'm wrong...there's MAYBE 10 official lifeguard stations on the whole island of Maui, HI -- with 2.5 Million visitors a year!

No C-Spine?

 How come during the first movie.. at about 5:00 the female lifeguard just gives up all C-Spine and gets the LBB set up, and then as they role their patient.. there is no C-Spine control. I know that if i was judging that competition I would of failed that team for letting go of C-Spine, espically for the MOI.. guy got air and was tossed into a tree.. Unless I don't know something that I should.. I think they made a no no.

Thats exactly what I was thinking too. They let his head flop everywhere!

Also, on the first patient in that video it didnt look like they were giving adequate compressions. He wasnt getting anywhere near the 1-1/2 - 2 inch deep compressions.

Just my (untrained) observations...

No doubt. That was horrible,un orginized, I would have failed them at that exact moment. Why bother using the LBB if you are not going to do it properly. No C-Collar either.....

I Certainly hope that's not what they do out there in the real world. But isn't a BLS Competition desgined to put your skills to the test, and think outside the box. That scares me, because watching those videos... is that how they treat actual injured patiens?
