Hello I wanna be an EMT when I get out the army in less than a year. I wanted to do it in California, but I'm not hearing good things. My question is what state has a high demand for EMTs.(preferabaly in the east coast)

The carolinas always have fire/ems positions open. The bad thing is they're non-union, but hey its a nice area!!!! Good luck.

Despite claims of College's and training facilties, there is no demand for, or shortage of Emergency medical technicians. the real problem to finding and retaining EMT's of any level.. The other side of this problem is a lack of education opportunities available to those at a lower license level looking to advance.

Shortly put EMT's are a dime a dozen.EMT's "Mills" are producing EMTs in mass numbers and not teaching them anything useful. Sure some of them know what a compound fracture is, but they have no clue what the differences are between a BLS patient and an ALS patient(as evidenced in a recent thread). They don't know how to recognize pneumonia,do not know the difference between angina and AMI, have no clue how to splint, cannot even operate a litter and don't know what questions to ask a patient to determine the cause of calling 911.

The literature supports the idea that employment rates for EMTs are projected to grow as fast as the average for all occupations. The demand is for more qualified EMT's not more EMT's. I am unable to cite a source, but the burnout rate for EMT's is extremely high, with some quoting the average career length of an EMT as 6 years.

I don't see us having a high demand for a career that only requires 110 hours of training and no formal education.
