EMT found dead after car hits tree

BRISTOL -- A 23-year-old man who lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree on Terryville Avenue early Thursday morning was pronounced dead at the scene, where a patrol officer found the 1991 Jeep Cherokee "wrapped" around a tree, according to a police report.

Traffic Lt. Kevin Morrell said Officer Demond Wil-son, while on routine patrol, came across the accident and immediately called for EMS and fire crews to extricate and treat the young man, identified as James Bentivengo.

Bentivengo, an EMT who worked for Bristol Hospital EMS, was the son of the fire department’s union president, Tom Bentivengo. According to Senior Fire Capt. Mark Martin, the younger Bentivengo was in the process of testing for a position with the fire department.

Those who knew Bentivengo called him "a good man who worked hard and loved to spend time with his son," who is almost 2. Bentivengo recently moved to Muzzy Street and loved working as an EMT, one of his friends said.

Morrell said the part of Terryville Avenue where Bentivengo’s Jeep left the road curved to the left, and based on preliminary accident-report details, the vehicle did not make the curve and continued straight before crashing head-on into a tree. The report indicates that after hitting the tree, the Jeep continued to move and again struck the tree on the side of the vehicle.
