Hello. I am an EMT Basic from SoCal, working for Care Ambulance, and teaching for Kaiser in Downey. Due to some recent life changes, I am looking to moving to the Houston or Austin Texas area (at the moment, I'm leaning towards Houstin, since its closer to the shore..). I did my research, and know all about getting certified in Texas through their reciprocity, but can anybody here provide some insight on companies that run in that area, which areas they cover, and anything else that might be useful to someone moving to Texas, and seeking work as an EMT? There's another thread, but I felt it was more geared towards Medics. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've worked and volunteered in both areas, although primarily volunteer since I have a full-time profession other than EMS. What would you like to know?

Acadian Ambulance is one of the biggest private companies that service Houston and Austin and much of Texas. Many areas otherwise are primarily serviced by fire departments, especially in smaller towns, but there are many volunteer EMS companies that are unrelated to fire as are there transport companies as well.

What are you looking for? I'm moving to Houston and have checked out their options - they have every type of EMS.

Montgomery county hospital district is a good place for intermediates and medics. They don't hire basics though

As for the Austin area, there are more services that are now hiring basics for 911, including Austin/Travis County, San Marcos, and probably some others.

I know that both Harris County Emergency Corps and Cypress Creek EMS regularly hire basics for 911 operations. (Harris County Emergency Corps also has a transfer operation called EMCORPS.)

In both the Austin and Houston areas, Acadian is primarily transfer with a few 911 contracts. (Bexar County outside of San Antonio and Huffman in Harris County.)

Tons of transfer operations in the Houston area and you'd be better off steering clear of the vast majority of them. The Houston/Harris County area is among the top, if not THE top, areas for ambulance company fraud.

There are many private transport companies in Houston and plenty of volunteer fire departments. So far I haven't found it too difficult to find a job here

Ivan from Care Ambulance?

Hey Ivan, I recently moved from Santa Fe Springs and from Care Ambulance as well. Small world huh? I interviewed with Acadian Ambulance a while back and all looked GREAT except that their schedule would not accomodate my going to school. They have their own EMS school which conforms to their work schedule if that is the direction you are looking in. I would have loved to work for them, another company that I've seen and heard good things about is Grace. Shoot me a pm, we may have worked together before, I can show you around a bit.

Beaumont EMS (about 1.5 hrs east of Houston) is a good service. Very progressive and pretty high volume. They hire all levels.

Frogman where are you now? Austin?

HFD hires often, Beaumont EMS as stated earlier is a good service with great call volume. Acadian is great if you want to go to school at their program(UT program curriculum). That's the only reason I'm in SE Texas.

Any idea on pay for medics at Beaumont?

Acadian in Beaumont start Basics at 13. Intermediates are around 14.. I'd say paramedics are 16-17
