Does you're emt license have to be CURRENT in order to take paramedic classes

If I joined the military and got out after my time obviously my emt license would be expired. Would you still be able to enroll in a paramedic program and just not work as an emt? May sound like a stupid question but I couldn't find info anywhere.
 
Most programs you need a current state certification to take medic classes
 
Guess I have to look into everything more, thanks.
