Does the training state matter?

Hi everyone. First, thanks for this forum, I was really lost as to where I could find information regarding EMT training and real-life job experiences, and this has been an excellent resource, so thank you!

Second, I would like to take the EMT-B training, but I will be moving in a few months. I am currently residing in Minnesota, will be moving to Vermont at the end of the summer. I can take a course in Minnesota before I leave, or wait till I get to Vermont. If it makes no difference, I would much rather take it now (much more convenient to my schedule), but I can't seem to lock down an answer as to if my Minnesota course will translate to Vermont. Is there some kind of state certification I need to worry about? I understand I'll take the NREMT test, which seems to be recognized throughout the country, but is there anything else that'll trip me up here?

Thanks for your time!

Google is your friend:

The Department may issue a Vermont EMT-B certificate for one to two years to a person who holds valid credentials entitling him/her to practice as an EMT-B in a state or province which meets or exceeds the content and objectives of the national standard curriculum for EMT-B's and which imposes a written and practical exam as a condition of those credentials, provided the applicant:

submits the application form available from the Department
has not been previously certified in Vermont as an EMT
is affiliated with a Vermont licensed ambulance or first responder service
To renew a certification obtained this way, an EMT-B must meet all recertification requirements for EMT's. The EMS office does not extend certifications obtained in this way. Vermont EMS does not have a list of states which meet the requirements above because states frequently change their requirements. The training of each applicant is verified with the EMS office of the state in which the applicant was originally certified or licensed. This typically takes four to six weeks. Reciprocity forms may be requested by selecting here.

Note that you have to be affiliated with a EMS agency to get a Vermont cert

If you know...

...where you're going and what you want to do when you get there, do it THERE!

There are few things more hemmorrhoidal than transferring certifications from one State to another. Often, some parts of whatever certifying procedure you went through will have to be repeated.

Culturally, you get watched more and with more judgment as well because everybody wants to be the one to spot how what you did there doesn't fit here! Who needs added scrutiny?

IMHO save yourself a pain and just do it there so you START on the same page as everyone else.

Good luck!

That being said it sounds like the OP has the time to do the training now, and less time when they get to VT. Also if they want to start working in the fall, they need their cert done soon. If they wait they aren't going to be good to go till the winter.
