Completed Paramedic course in Maryland. Just moved to Florida, and am wondering if I can challenge the Florida medic exam without taking MD exam.

I checked this site, but it doesn't list my situation as one of the options on the form for applying.

http://www.doh.state.fl.us/

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

IIRC you need to have national registry to obtain Florida certification.

Keep in mind you are not able to get MD Paramedic certification without affiliation with a service in the state.

As long as you have your NREMT-P you should be fine.

Where did you graduate from? I recently graduated from Maryland as well back in May.

That's what I assumed as well. But according to the site, it's not the case.

You need to challenge the Florida State exam. I can't find the quote, but I had read it on here somewhere explicitly.

Edit: here it is...

Exam
All EMT and paramedic certification applicants must take and pass the state required examination to become Florida certified. Both exams are computer based. The required EMT exam is developed by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and the paramedic examination is state-developed. Prior to receiving Florida certification, each applicant must pass the Florida approved examination.

EMT candidates who received their training at a Florida approved EMT program will take the NREMT certification examination.
EMT candidates who are currently certified in good standing by another U.S. state or territory or by NREMT will take the NREMT written basic assessment exam
Paramedic candidates will take the state-developed examination.

Now, the problem arises when it comes to the four check-boxes on the online application, it doesn't have an option that suits me. They are...

Paramedic Florida Program Graduate Application -- I am a graduate of a Florida approved Paramedic school.
Florida EMT and also registered in Florida as a Physician, Dentist, RN or PA in Florida and applying for Paramedic
Paramedic non-Florida Program Graduate Application -- I currently satisfy the training requirements of another state or US territory as evidenced by certification or licensure from that state or territory that is in good standing (current, free of disciplinary limitation, and not the subject of current disciplinary investigation or procedure).
Paramedic Military Trained Application -- I am currently employed by or honorably, medically or generally discharged from the United States Military and either currently hold or at the time of discharge held the job classification of EMT or Paramedic. I am currently registered with NREMT.

Now, I don't satisfy the requirements for any of these.. but I'm mainly confused about the one I quoted in red. Apparently NREMT doesn't count - and I don't have my Maryland Paramedic (but I'm still eligible to test there).

So what I need to know is, do I HAVE to go back to Maryland to take the test, or can I take the Florida one.. even though I was trained in Maryland?

This may be something to contact them directly about. I know Louisiana has the same weird rule where you need to have a state certification to apply. I would look at maybe obtaining a state like Iowa or Minnesota, that only require NREMT to obtain a license. That way you won't have to drive back to Maryland and fight with MIEMSS to take the test, and obtain Maryland a license.

Yeah, I plan on contacting them tomorrow morning ASAP... Was just hoping there would be someone here who could calm my nerves in the meantime.

Thanks a lot MedicBender
