Soon, not as soon as I would like but soon nontheless, I will be attending paramedic school. One of the things I'm considering because I know what ground paramedics get payed in this state, is trying to become a flight medic.

I was looking at the employment sight of the local air ambulance service, and the requirements make no mention of one of the credentials we have in our state, the Certified Flight Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic, or CFEMT-P.

I am wondering, is the CFEMT-P required before one becomes a flight medic, or is it something one acquires after getting some work expirience?

I am specifically asking about Pennsylvania, but answers from other states are also welcome.

Thanks

To my knowledge, and to my search even in your state, I could not find anything regarding a "Certified Flight Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic". However, the International Association of Flight Paramedics (IAFP) does test paramedics to become Flight Paramedic - Certified (FP-C).

Some programs do require you to either have taken some sort of critical care paramedic course, ususally accepting the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) CCEMT-P course, and/or FP-C, but most prefer it. Their CCEMT-P course trains the ground medic for critical care transport up to and including flight. The FP-C, on the other hand, will test the candidate as an experienced provider.

If you truely want to fly, I strongly suggest getting 3-5 years of busy 911 experience, then going CCEMT-P, then getting FP-C. Good luck.

sorry, I put the wrong credential down. I was thinking CFRN and typed CFEMT-P. thanks for the advice. I'm obviously going to try and get as much expirience as I can as an EMT-P before I go for flight, and now I'll definitely do critical care. thankx
