I recently heard rumors about a state curriculum for critical care paramedic in PA; and it will not be just a class like CCEMTP. I heard it actually give you expanded scope of practice after certification.

Can anyone here give me more detail information? Is it a state recognized course for CCPC? or is it just a Pennsylvania thing? Are we really getting more skills?

Haven't heard anything like that but who knows.

I live in PA and haven't heard anything about this. It would be a great thing though so hoping its true.

I think he might be referring to something that was in the PA Bulletin, Vol. 41, No. 44 (10-29-11) under Proposed Rulemaking (5927-5928), 1027.36. Critical care transport ambulance service, section (d) Expanded scope of practice.

(d) Expanded scope of practice. When providing EMS through a critical care transport ambulance service, the scope of practice of an EMS provider above the AEMT level will be expanded. This expansion will include EMS skills, the use of equipment in addition to those included in the EMS provider's general scope of practice if the EMS provider has received education to perform those skills and use that equipment by having successfully completed a critical care transport educational program approved by the Department. The EMS provider is required to be able to document having received that education and to demonstrate competence in the performance of those skills to the EMS agency medical director. Use of that equipment by that level of EMS provider will be authorized by the Department as published in a notice in the Pennsylvania Bulletin. An EMS provider shall perform these skills as directed by the Statewide EMS protocols applicable to a critical care transport ambulance service or as otherwise directed by a medical command physician.

Hey just giving this thread a bump. It seems like PA is finally inching towards completion of a critical care cert for Paramedics. I know a position paper / statement for phase 2 was put out in 2013 and the most recent PA EMS Bulletin references an impending implementation of a Critical Care Paramedic cert in a section explaining why other Paramedics will have a diminshed scope of practice for transport of mechanically vented patients. The proposed scope of practice when working in conjunction with a RN is very broad , but likely to reflect the reality for most teams currently operating the state, especially flight teams. Has anyone else kept up with this?
