Hello,

I am an EMT-B with a year experience. I have just started my second semester of a 2.5 year Respiratory Program. My end goal is to some day be a rapid response nurse or ER nurse. Here is the problem though, I miss working on the ambulance is i find school so mind numbingly boring and slow at this point

I was hoping to here a happy medic on whether you still enjoy what you do, money aside, and if you could go back would you change your career choice?

Thank you guys

There are several current threads that talk about the woes of this field. Many of us love what we do- myself included. I still look forward to coming to work every day.

But if you truly have a passion for medicine, there is only so far you can progress as a paramedic. While you can't imagine doing anything else, you start to realize you're capable of much more. You reach a point where your knowledge makes protocols feel restrictive and frustrating.

And while money may not be an issue, happiness doesn't pay the bills.

Along with the lack of advancement and the general poor pay, you also have to deal with the poor personalities that run rampant in this field. The posters on this forum are not an accurate portrayal of the majority of prehospital providers.

If you're on track to get an advanced education, stay that track and just do EMS on the side for fun. Just my .02.

If you want to be a nurse, why are you in a respiratory program???? Get into a nursing program. While you are going to school get a job as an EMT, or get into a volunteer spot. That way you won't miss out on working the ambulance.
