The buttocks are considered part of the perinium right? So they would be 1%? Or would it be .5% Since it just the posterior portion?

Front and back of the Head and neck is 9% so does that mean burns just to the face are 2.25%?

I am probably not the best to answer since we (CCT, Flight and hospital I am familiar with in my area) utilize the Lund-Browder chart for a more accurate estimation when doing fluid resuscitation instead of the Rule of 9s. This chart give 5% for the buttocks or 2.5% for each cheek. If you are in Paramedic school you might be taught this if you are learning the Parkland formula. The Rule of 9s tends to underestimate the amount of area burned for resuscitation purposes but is okay for initial assessment and to get the patient to a hospital or if you are functioning at the Basic level.

So, your answer will depend on how critical your estiminate is and which chart you will be utilizing.

Think about it for a second. How big is the perineum? How big are the buttocks? How big are the legs? Why would the buttocks only be 1%?

Your right that too small a number. The back is 18% so would that make buttocks around 6?

Well, do you think the buttocks are considered part of the back or the legs? What % are the chest and abdomen? Is that area bigger or smaller than the back if you inclue the buttocks as part of the back?

if you add the buttocks to the back it would make the chest/abdomen smaller then the back. Each are 18%. If you consider them part of the legs, the entire posterior of a leg is 9%. So one buttock would be around 3%?

well if you burn your Buttocks....

thats a nice meaty part to burn right ;) just kidding.

...but one must have to wonder how this burn happened...too many lit farts?

A simple way to measure burn areas is too simply use the patients palm as a 1% "ruler" of sorts.

How many palms of the hand does it take to cover the burn area? That is the % of BSA.

Try it on your own body using your 9's chart. It works!

Exactly, this is how I was taught and have used many times in the field.
