Boston Marathon May Serve as Medical Training Ground
Health officials to track ill runners as they would patients during an attack

Sue Reinert
The Patriot Ledger (Quincy, MA)

The state wants to make the Boston Marathon and its 20,000 runners a testing ground for systems that could be used to track patients in a flu pandemic or bioterrorism attack.

With hundreds of runners requiring medical treatment during the yearly race, "this is not something that may happen, it actually does happen," said Assistant Health Commissioner Nancy Ridley.

"It gives us a real-life event to track patients," she added.

My co. has done this before for large events.... having someone whos job it is to compile all patient contact data - ID # for the biker, CC, Location, and treatment.... great thing to do, and lets us plan where we need units.

This sounds like a great learning tool for new EMTs and students alike that havent the opportunity of experience.

I wish I could do this with the LR Marathon and the Race 4 the Cure events.

with roughly 1,000 EMS providers along the route with 2,000- 3,000 race participants, you'd think that every provider and student would get a pt contact at least once during the event.

20,000 runners.... in their worst year recently, they had 1100+ patients.

While my numbers were lower than what the reality is, Im still correct that nearly every EMT/Medic/Student is guaranteed a pt contact. I wish I lived near a metropolitan area where theres more opportunity to learn and such, oh wait I am moving to a metropolitan area! :P (Imagine going from living in a village of 2,000 people to living in LR with a population of 2,673,400  )

Anyway heres your thread back - more runners=more patients.

Are you kidding...a student is great, and 20 of them, boy there is nothing they should miss.

But then again, a simple cramp from dehydration and they might just be calling ALS to rush this MI patient straight to a Cath Lab somewhere....

I guess what I meant that for EMT/Medic students precepting with BEMS crews would get a learning experience, and for the REAL EMTS and Medics out there this is a good training for MCIs and pt. tracking and good way for the Boston EMS system to find any kinks and to resolve them before and actual major disaster occured. Does that make better sense?????
