The state wants to make the Boston Marathon and its 20,000 runners a testing ground for systems that could be used to track patients in a flu pandemic or bioterrorism attack.
With hundreds of runners requiring medical treatment during the yearly race, "this is not something that may happen, it actually does happen," said Assistant Health Commissioner Nancy Ridley.
"It gives us a real-life event to track patients," she added.
