I'm in grade 12, currently living near Toronto, Ontario. I'm looking to take a year off to work and then apply to schools in the states next year. I have no idea what schools have the best or most "reputable" programs. I don't really know anyone who can help me with this and it would be really great if you guys could recommend me some programs. What are the "best" or ideal programs that you would recommend?

Preferably I would be looking for programs closer to Toronto (Chicago, Michigan, NY, NJ, etc) so I could hop on a greyhound back home for holidays and what not, but I'm really open to any suggestions and any additional information you could include would be great.

Your best bet is to stay in Canada. While I went to school in the US and had a great experience I am in the minority from others I have talk to. While it costs more and may be harder the Canadian programs are more comprehensive and will give you an overall better education. I had to put in a lot of extra work and time to get to where I needed to be. I was also lucky in the fact that the school I went to was recognized in a few Canadian provinces.

Where do you want to end up working? How far do you want to go in EMS?

I would probably want to end up working in the GTA. I'm not entirely sure how far I want to go in EMS because my biggest concern right now is getting into a program. The thing about the schools in Ontario is that they seem incredibly overwhelming. I've been reading that schools like Humber, Centennial, and such have about 800-1000 applicants with anywhere from 40-80 spots. On top of that, a large amount of the applicants hold university degrees and have grades I find are hard to compete with (90%+) in post secondary courses, myself sitting at around low to mid 80s in high school courses.

Would you know anything about admissions to programs outside on ON? I could check the sites for requirements easy enough but i mean the competition. I've heard good things about some programs in BC or AB.

I am not an expert on the EMS system or education in Canada, but I can not imagine why anyone would want to come to the USA for there EMS education. Unless perhaps you want to enroll into a 4 year Paramedicine or EMS degree, which we do offer. However you will find after graduation your Paramedic certification is the same as the NREMT-P who went to a 1 year vocational school. ;-)
