Well, if you ask any of my fellow crewmembers at the ambulance or the firefighters on my district, they'll tell you that I've been complaining for some time that it is always the other crew or station that gets the good MVAs, vehicles vs. bicycles, log trucks vs. pickups, etc.
So what happens last night? Right as I'm getting into bed, my fire district (and my ambulance service) gets paged out to a single vehicle rollover, vehicle possibly in the water. (It's like 10 degrees out, so we're all pretty excited!) I and two other firefighters respond in our rescue engine. We were like the second rig on scene and we find a five pts sitting in the snow and one of our firefighters who came in the first engine, (w/o rescue equipment) all of them soaking wet. (The pts had walked up the road a little way and he had not seen them so he went into the creek check out the vehicle.)
The vehicle was down a 40 foot embankment, upside down, in the water. The pts had all self extricated and were sitting in a passer-by's vehicle to keep warm, but they had ice on their cloths still and two were c/o back pain. Of the five of them one was an adult, then there were four girls, probably 16, 14, 9, and 7. The 9 and 7 y/o one had not been wearing seatblets and were both c/o mid to upper back pain and both also had lacs on their heads and arms from glass.
Well, long story short, we borded the two little ones before ambulances started arriving. The ambulance crews took care of packaging the mom and two older girls while me and another EMT from the ambulance got vitals and tried to warm the first two up. They all ended up being transported.
All of this was complicated of course by the fact that it was starting to snow and the section of road we were on was covered in ice and just happened to be a steep hill.
So, not that I didn't want to be there, but be careful what you complain about and wish for!
